Mozilla's mission is to promote openness, innovation, and opportunity on the web. We do this by creating great software, like the firefox browser, and building movements, like Drumbeat, that give people tools to take control of their online lives.
As a non-profit organization, we define success in terms of building communities and enriching people’s lives instead of benefiting our shareholders (guess what: we don’t even have shareholders). We believe in the power and potential of the Internet and want to see it thrive for everyone, everywhere.

Forums :
Mozilla has forums to enable communication among the Mozilla community. They are set up so they can be read as newsgroups, mailing lists or web groups - so it's convenient for everyone to take part.
If you think a new Mozilla discussion forum is needed, file a bug and we'll get right on it. It's not a complicated process. Please don't just go and set up a plain Google Group or similar thing, as not everyone finds it convenient to read groups on the web.

Mozilla is an open source project governed as a meritocracy. Our community is structured as a virtual organization where authority is distributed to both volunteer and employed community members as they show their abilities through contributions to the project.

Mozilla is a global community of people creating a better Internet. We build public benefit into the Internet by creating free, open source products and technologies that improve the online experience for people everywhere.
There are several organizations that support the Mozilla community and Mozilla's principles. They include the non-profit Mozilla Foundation as well as two wholly owned taxable subsidiaries, the Mozilla Corporation and Mozilla Messaging. Mozilla considers itself a hybrid organization, combining non-profit and market strategies to ensure the Internet remains a shared public resource.

Mozilla Foundation :

The Mozilla Foundation is is a California non-profit corporation exempt from Federal income taxation under IRC 501(c)(3). The Foundation supports the existing Mozilla community, overseeing Mozilla's governance structure and managing shared resources like this web site. It also actively seeks out new ways for people around the world to recognize and steward the Internet as a critical public resource

Mozilla Corporation :

The Mozilla Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Mozilla Foundation, works with the community to develop software that advances Mozilla's principles. This includes the Firefox browser, which is well recognized as a market leader in security, privacy and language localization. These features make the Internet safer and more accessible.

Mozilla Messaging :

Mozilla Messaging is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Mozilla Foundation that develops and promotes products that people can use to communicate online in ways that align with Mozilla's principles. This includes the creation of the Thunderbird email client.

Affiliates :

The Mozilla Foundation has established relationships with a number of affiliated organizations around the globe that promote and support Mozilla principles, products and community.

Mozilla Grants :

Since 2006, Mozilla has awarded over two million dollars to fund projects that contribute to the health of the Open Web. The Mozilla Grants program is jointly funded by the Mozilla Corporation and the Mozilla Foundation, and awards financial support to individuals and organizations whose work supports and enhances the mission and values of the Mozilla Project.

Goals :

Mozilla makes grants to individuals and organizations all over the world. We mainly fund activity that supports the Mozilla Grants program's four target areas:
  • Accessibility: Mozilla believes that the Internet truly is for everyone, and that those with disabilities should be able to participate on the Web along with their sighted and hearing peers. As part of our accessibility strategy, we are funding the development of free, open source options for those with visual and auditory impairments.
  • Community: Mozilla offers suppport to the broader free culture and open source community, as part of Mozilla's general effort to 'give back', aiding in the creation of technologies and projects that increase the health of the open Web ecosystem.
  • Education: As part of Mozilla's broader education initiative, we support educational institutions that are producing the next generation of innovative creators of software.
  • Open Source: These grants support the creation and adoption of Web standards, open source principles, and the overall principles of transparency, collaboration, and openness that free and open source software projects adhere to.

Mozilla project was created in 1998 with the release of the Netscape browser suite source codefirst year, new community members from around the world had already contributed new functionality, enhanced existing features and became engaged in the management and planning of the project itself. that was intended to harness the creative power of thousands of programmers on the Internet and fuel unprecedented levels of innovation in the browser market. By creating an open community, the Mozilla project had become larger than any one company. Community members got involved and expanded the scope of the project's original mission—instead of just working on Netscape's next browser, people started creating a variety of browsers, development tools and a range of other projects. People contributed to Mozilla in different ways, but everyone was passionate about creating free software that would enable people to have a choice in how they experienced the Internet.
After several years of development, Mozilla 1.0, the first major version, was released in 2002. This version featured many improvements to the browser, email client and other applications included in the suite, but not many people were using it. By 2002, well over 90% of Internet users were browsing with Internet Explorer. Not many people noticed at the time, but the first version of Phoenix (later renamed to Firefox) was also released by Mozilla community members that year with the goal of providing the best possible browsing experience to the widest possible set of people.
In 2003, the Mozilla project created the Mozilla Foundation, an independent non-profit organization supported by individual donors and a variety of companies. The new Mozilla Foundation continued the role of managing the daily operations of the project and also officially took on the role of promoting openness, innovation, and opportunity on the Internet. It did this by continuing to release software, such as Firefox and Thunderbird, and expanding to new areas, such as providing grants to support accessibility improvements on the Web.
Firefox 1.0 was released in 2004 and became a big success. In less than a year, Firefox had been downloaded over 100 million times. New versions of Firefox have come out regularly since then and keep setting new records. The popularity of Firefox has helped bring choice back to users. In 2008, Firefox reached 20% worldwide market share and renewed competition has accelerated innovation and improved the Internet for everyone.
Mozilla celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2008. In ten years the community has shown that commercial companies can benefit by collaborating in open source projects and that great end user products can be produced as open source software. More people than ever before are using the Internet and are experiencing it in their own language. A sustainable organization has been created that uses market mechanisms to support a public benefit mission and this model has been reused by others to create open, transparent and collaborative organizations in a broadrange of areas.
The next ten years have challenges and opportunities equal to those of our first decade. There's no guarantee that the Internet will remain open or enjoyable or safe. Mozilla will continue to provide an opportunity for people to make their voices heard and to shape their own online lives. Of course, we're not alone in doing this. The Mozilla community, as well as other open source projects and other public benefit organizations, exists only because of the people who are engaged with making our common goals a reality. Kemudian dari sisi kecepatan, browser ini memiliki kecepatan lebih baik dibandingkan browser yang lebih dahulu terkenal. Fitur lain adalah download manager yang sudah terintegrasi di dalamnya yang mengijinkan pengguna untuk melakukan resume dan suspend proses download. Juga kemampuan untuk menjangkau sebuah site yang tidak dapat dibuka oleh browser lainnya.
Kemudahan berselancar dengan tab akan membuat browsing lebih cepat dan praktis.yang memungkinkan Anda dapat terus membaca suatu halaman ketika halaman lain sedang diload. Browser yang mampu membuat rekor dunia karena jumlah Mozilla Firefox download mencapai yang terbanyak ini dapat menghentikan iklan popup yang mengganggu saat berselancar. Ketika sebuah situs mencoba membuka popup, Firefox mengijinkan user untuk mengendalikannya adalah suatu kelebihan browser yang semakin tahun popular ini. Dari sisi keamanan, web browser ini juga mampu mencegah phising.
Tetapi walaupun demikian Web browser yang kompatibel dengan beberapa web programming seperti JavaScript, PHP, Java, Perl dan Phyton ini juga masih mempunyai beberapa kekurangan/kelemahan, diantaranya Waktu proses halaman situs tertentu lebih lambat, diperkirakan karena masalah kompatibilitas atau kesesuaian antara pengkodean halaman situs dengan browser Mozilla Firefox, Web browser ini juga tidak terintegrasi dengan Outlook maupun Outlook Express, beberapa fasilitas e-mail tidak bekerja dengan baik, seperti melihat e-mail HTML maupun membuka link langsung dari e-mail di Outlook, Mozilla juga tidak mendukung sinkronisasi dengan PocketPC Windows dan sinkronisasi USB-cradle, misalnya untuk men-download web calendar.
